CYCLING TOUR OF TRANSYLVANIA
Explore on bike one of Europe’s most beautiful regions: Transylvania.
Unlike most Transylvania cycling tours, this one covers the Saxon area, as well as the interesting so-called Szeklerland, inhabited by a Hungarian-speaking population. Transylvania is a unique cultural landscape.
In the saddle, we will explore ancient villages and towns, cycle on small paths, over hills, and through forests. We start the tour in Bucharest and explore then the Saxon region around Brasov and Sighisoara. We will then discover the Szeklerland, including Praid, Corund, and Odorhei. The tour ends in Bucharest, not before getting to know better the superb city of Brasov.

Arrival in Bucharest and transfer to Bran
At the airport in Bucharest, you will be welcomed by your tour guide. Our journey begins with a drive through the Carpathian Mountains. Today’s destination is Bran / Zarnesti, set in a beautiful location, at the foot of the King’s Stone mountains. Overnight in a family-run guesthouse. (B)
Bran castle and cycling to Viscri
After breakfast, we cycle to Bran Castle, also known as Dracula Castle. Here we visit the old castle, which was built in the 14th century and learn more about the Wallachian prince Vlad Tepes, who served as inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. We will drive afterwards by minibus to Fagaras and start our bike trip to Viscri. The region was settled in the 12th century by German colonists, known as Transylvanian Saxons. We drive through old villages, through the lovely countryside of Transylvania and reach in the evening Viscri. We will sleep in a lovely guesthouse in the village. (B, L, D)

Viscri – Meschendorf – Crit – Viscri
Breakfast. Today we’ll experience Transylvania at its finest. By bike, we will explore the region south of Sighisoara. In the morning, we drive over hills and through forests to Meschendorf, a secluded and picturesque village. Here we visit the beautiful fortified church and then bike Crit, where we have lunch. In the afternoon, we cycle further to Bunesti. Along the way, we learn more about the history of the region and of the Transylvanian Saxons. Late in the afternoon we’ll arrive back to Viscri and explore it on foot. We will also meet some of the few remaining Saxons in Viscri. (B, L, D)

Saschiz – Sighisoara – Corund
After breakfast, we travel by minibus to Saschiz and visit the Info Centre of the NGO Discover Tarnava Mare. This is one of the organizations working for the preservation and restoration of the old Saxon villages and fortified churches, and for the revival of ancient traditions.
From Saschiz we continue by bike to Sighisoara, one of the most beautiful cities of Transylvania. The small town on the Tarnava River is one of the last inhabited citadels in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, we will drive shortly to Cristuru Secuiesc and cycle from there to Bezid Lake and further on to Inlaceni. In the evening, we reach our comfortable pension in Corund. (B, L, D)

Breakfast. Many of the inhabitants of Corund are ceramics manufacturers, the village is well-known for that throughout Romania. In the morning, we will visit a ceramics workshop and learn more about this craft. On our bikes, we continue to Praid, where we will visit the famous salt mine and then come back to Corund. The afternoon is at leisure for relaxation and individual tours in the area. (B, L, D)

Odorhei – Darjiu – Homorod
After breakfast, we will drive to Odorheiu, the most important city in the region and explore on a short walk its old town. In the saddle, we continue to Darjiu, a village inhabited by Hungarian-speaking Unitarians. The Unitarian Church is a very special church, which originated in the Middle Ages in Transylvania. We will learn more about this group and will also visit the old Unitarian Church with interesting details. Then we drive through the beautiful nature to Homorod, today’s destination. (B, L, D)

Homorod – Rupea – Racos – Brasov
Breakfast. A few kilometers from Homorod, lies Rupea is, where we will visit the beautifully restored castle from the 13thcentury. It was built by the Teutonic Knights, when the military order had, for a short time its headquarters in Southern Transylvania. Not far from Rupea we will begin our bike tour, which will take us first to Racos, where an old castle waits for us on the banks of the river Olt. Along the Olt River, through remote villages and wild nature, we reach in the late afternoon Maierus. From here our minibus will take us to Brasov. (B, L, D)
